Hi, my name is _____

The assistant principal at my school told me and the other two teachers who were there setting up for school the first name of a new student.

Ms Laura*

It makes me really wonder about parenthood.  It makes me wonder about why you would name your child something like this.  It makes me kind of understand why some children have issues.

It makes me think of Janet Jackson.  Ms Jackson, if you're nasty.

It makes me wonder if I have her in my class and if I will be able to say her name each day with a straight face.

* Name has been changed to protect those who did not name themselves, but it is still Ms ______.  Including the capital letters and the space.  What?!?!?

  1. oh my!! This made me think of the episode of Friends where Phoebe goes to change her last name after she gets married, and ends up changing the whole thing to Princess Consuela Banana-Hammock! LOL Also set my mind reeling... is her first name Ms with middle name ___ ? Or is the first name legally Ms ___ with a different middle name?

    1. First name is legally Ms _____. Different middle name and a hyphenated last name.

  2. Wow, I've never heard that one before. It DOES make you wonder about her parents and what the heck they were thinking? Were they on drugs? Was it a political statement? Are they just odd? Probably none of the above. But makes you wonder :)

    1. The name really does lead to so many more questions...

  3. That's an odd one to be sure. Extremely feminist mom?
I recently found out that my cousin's husband's 75-year old mother is named Peter. I thought it was an odd nickname or something but he said no - that's her given name, her parent's really wanted a boy. Weird.

    1. Peter. Hm. When I was younger, I always loved girls with "boy" names. I never heard Peter, though. I would have had to tell my child the name was given for a different reason. I always feel bad when people tell me that their parents wanted the other sex when they were born.

  4. That is...weird. I don't know what some people are thinking. Do they think that adding Ms to the start of a child's name will bestow some kind of importance on her? Parents: before you name your children, ask yourself this important question: "will this make my child hate me when s/he gets older?"

    1. I know I'm not supposed to judge, but I agree that it is just weird.

Now people who address people as Ms Jane, Ms Lucy, Ms Candace will have to call her Ms Ms _____.

  5. Ha, Ms Ms....just weird. Seriously some parents. I agonised for days, nay months with my girls trying every nickname and way their names could be shortened, also what their initials would spell. All just to make sure that nothing would crop up that they could be teased over or that they would hate me for later. It's as bad as Teresa Green!!

    1. I'm pretty sure this mother must not have taken much time to determine the ridicule that could come to her daughter due to her name.

Glad you did and I hope it led to little teasing on your children's names.

I share my thoughts and would love to read your thoughts, too.
