I don't want to keep stepping

Even when I was in prime shape, I hated walking up lots of stairs.

When I was in college, I was reassured that it was normal when a superb, Olympic-caliber distance runner told me that she got winded walking up a lot of stairs, too.

Since then, I don't feel bad when I get tired from lots of stairs.

I do get angry at them though.

Case in point:

There is no reason that a company should ever leave the up escalator that is this long out of service like it was the other day when I was leaving a store in Manhattan.  I don't know if you can get the full effect of their length just by looking at them, so if you need to count the stairs and then count the stairs on a normal staircase in your house or in your building, feel free.  I estimated that this was about three, almost four, stories of straight stairs.

Walking up these stairs was so painful that I was out of breath and my legs were actually slightly burning for a while after finishing the climb.

On the bright side, I guess it was a good butt and thigh workout.

  1. I actually love stairs, but I can totally relate to the frustration with companies that ignore maintenance. But.. let's keep looking at the bright side, right? Work those legs!

    1. Really long! I was tempted to stop in the middle, but I wasn't sure what I would do if I stopped... I'd either have to go down and then try again, or just keep going up. It was horrible.

  5. I am and active person and I.HATE.STAIRS. They always make my legs hurt no matter how fit I am. And that length of stairs will definitely leave me winded.

I suggest a curt note to the company about shoppers not returning if their escalators aren't in operation. :-)

    1. Good idea with the note.

I am glad I'm not the only active person who hurts from stairs.

  6. I am in a love hate relationship with stairs at the moment. The fact my new place of work is on 3 floors is one of the things that makes it such a quirky buliding to work in. However, when you are at the bottom and need to get to the staff room at the top for your break and don't want to waste any of your time, running up all those stairs can take a moment or two to recover from!!

I feel for you! Plus do you ever find that walking up a stationary escalator can send you a little dizzy because your brain is acoustomed to it moving? Or is that just me!!

    1. That is a lot of stairs to deal with daily multiple times a day. At least you can count it as a part of a daily workout if you do it a few times each day.

I almost tripped twice when I first got on the non-moving escalator because I was unconsciously thinking it would be working.
