Summer is tasty plastic tubes

Summer always reminds me of freeze pops.  I have such strong memories of eating entire 100-pack boxes of them over the course of two to three days with my siblings and our childhood homies.

We would eat pop after pop.  So much so that we would start throwing the wrappers away in different containers or put them directly into the outside trashcan so that our mother would not realize we had eaten so many of them.  (Looking back, she must have known when Saturday came and she was buying another box or two of 100.)

Summer is still memories of eating those freeze pops and driving all around town laughing and having fun.

Every time I see those in a store or see a forgotten wrapper on the ground it makes me smile.

How flavored water in skinny, flimsy plastic tubes could be so delicious and addictive, I will never quite understand.  But, I still love them.

Stream of Consciousness Sunday hosted by Jana A at Jana's Thinking Place.  Today's prompt: What does summer smell or taste like to you?  And why?  You can take part - write for five minutes, link up to Jana's site, read others' posts, and share your own post.

  1. I'm old enough that I actually remember when they added the blue freeze pop. At the advent of blue, all the blue Freeze Pops would disappear first. Then the rest of the colors would dwindle down until my brother and I were left with our least favorite, green.

    1. I just can't get into a lot of blue foods. I think it is the lasting effect they have on the tongue.

  2. Yum! Love love love freeze pop. I have to agree with Erin that green was gross, though.

  3. That was a favorite treat of mine too! They were just so fun to eat. I wouldn't eat them now. But, oh, the memories!

    1. I haven't had them in years, though I almost gave in to them in the grocery store today. Maybe next time.

  4. Great post! My cousin and I would eat freezer pops by the dozen as well. Now my kids only get the super expensive ones from the health-food store and even then I feel guilty about the plastic wrappers so I invested in a shaved ice maker so they can make their own snow cones and put on toppings like raspberries, or lemon juice and sugar because that's the kind of annoyingly healthy childhood they are going to have to overcome while my cousin and I wax nostalgic over freezer pops and marshmallow fluff.

I'm sure your kids will look back years from now and have memories of the shaved ice!

  6. My kids LOOOVE those. In our old neighborhood we all kept huge boxes of them to give to whatever kids happened to be playing in our yards at the time. I never like them though...guess I'm a snob...:0

    1. I would have loved to live in a neighborhood like that!

Doesn't make you a food snob... unless you don't like ice cream, too. ;-)

  7. I used to love freeze pops, too! I had to beg my mom to buy them for me. I haven't had one in years. You brought back good memories for me. ty

    1. Thanks!

I might have to buy a pack just to try them again. I haven't had them in forever and am not sure if my adult taste buds would like them as much as my youth taste buds.

  8. I still buy those boxes! We all eat them so we go through it like crazy people. I, too, remember when the blue came along. We still compare tongue odors after we've each consumed a few. Great memories!
