I could be Arnold's sister

Went today to the barber to get my afro cleaned up.

Since I took out my twist-braids, it's been really uneven and needed to be evened out.

I should have known not to do it this way.

I have not had anyone beside myself or my boyfriend trim or cut my hair in over 12 years.  I know that when I go and pay to have someone else do it, it will not look the way I want it to look.  Or they will interpret trim to mean several inches.  Even when the BF did it, he often would cut more than I wanted.

So, what made me think this time would be different?

I guess I thought that since it was a barber - a man - he might be more used to cutting afros.

I guess I thought wrong.

I left out of there thinking it looked ok until I got a better look in car as I walked to get on the train to the grocery store.  I had a flat top.
Afros should not have flat tops!

They should be round.  I didn't get to get a better look until I got home and realized just how bad it was.  The top is significantly shorter than the sides, so much so that I look like I could be Hey Arnold's sister.  I look like my head is shaped like a football.

It is so short on top that I am not sure if I can put my twists in and then rock a twist out.

I should have known better than to trust a man to cut my afro when all the customers inside were getting fades and low cut styles.

Back to square one of growth.  Next time, I go to someone who regularly cuts afros... or I go back to doing it myself.

  1. Hey! No picture?! haha. I'm sorry - - I hate it when that happens! I'm sure it doesn't look as bad as you think it does, though.

  2. I sooo hear you on this one!! I had one hairdresser once who did the opposite of what I asked, I eventually took the hint and used a little reverse Psychology on her and that was the occassion she did what I wanted! Needless to say I no longer use that hairdresser!! Hope you manage to work it out.

  3. Princess Ada, You are beautiful and will always be beautiful no matter what hair cut choose, your barber's mistake couldn't hurt you no matter how bad he shaving skill is....Arnold is such a strong ugly likeness to use on yourself.... Please don't do that again.....LMAO God,I just had goose bumps thinking about it """""yikes"""""" Where is the picture though, let us be the judge of your far fetched analysis, I can guess you are so far off north of your story.

  5. So sorry! I can't let ANYONE color my hair. I do it from a box with my own two hands. I have tried 3 times and i was much younger. One lady made it look "natural" and it turned cranberry not brown! The other two were supposed to make light brown highlights and made them almost white (so i was 24 and had white looking streaks...aged me a lot!) Even my kid sister cried on that one. Now, that I am gray, I color it for $8.99 instead of a ton. So sorry..

    1. It'll grow back eventually. I hate it and have to figure out how to make it work, though.

Glad you figured out the solution to the failed hair coloring.

  7. Sorry, I forgot to give a "hey arnold!! Shoutout! Here's my post:

Thats sucks...I'm so sorry. This reconfirms my comittment to trim, henna, and style my own hair. People look at me like I'm crazy--but I know I could look crazier! lol. Anyway, I love your resolve. You are still gorgeous...though I feel your pain!

    1. It reaffirms mine. For some reason, I keep having faith in other people's abilities.

And then they fail me and I am left with hair way shorter than I wanted after trying to regrow it.

  8. And THAT is why I never trust a hair dresser. (or barber)

    1. Oh, hell-no! Perhaps the next time you see a photo of me I will have either grown it back, or figured out a way to look human again.

  10. Awww that REALLY hurts. It's a pain in the butt to grow hair out and get it just like you want it. I have to learn lessons OVER and OVER again.

    1. Such a pain. I seem to keep repeating the same cycle of growing it back and then trusting someone to "trim" it a bit to even out the ends.

Never fails that it is about two inches shorter than I wanted - which wouldn't sound like a lot, except that currently my hair is back down to about two inches in length.
